Step-by-step plan Dutch Open Solarboat Challenge 2009

Teams participating in the Dutch Open Solarboat Challenge have to complete a step-by-step plan.

Before a team is admitted to the ultimate race, the steps 1 to 8 have to be completed.

Each step is assessed by the organisation’s independent experts (step 1), a technical committee (steps 2- 6) and the contest officials (steps 7 and 8).

An approval is allotted to each step. Only after this approval is given, the team is admitted to the next step.

Step 1:

Registration with the organisation.

Deadline: 1 January 2009

Step 2:

Global outline of design, with minimally the form of the hull, the propulsion installation and the attachment of the solar panels clearly indicated in the drafts.

Deadline:

15 January 2009

Step 3:

Adaptation of the concept and detailing of the technical construction. The drafts should minimally and clearly show the location of the attachment and the attachment method of the battery container, the seat(s), the solar panels and the engine. The Open class should also include an exact drawing of the solar panel’s lay-out and the calculation of the surface area.

Deadline:

15 February 2009

Step 4:

Design of the electric system that connects the solar panel to the engine, both the electrical circuit diagram and its physical execution.

Allotment of solar panels on loan to the teams in the A and B Classes. In principle, the solar panels are available as from the middle of April 2009.

Deadline:

15 March 2009

Step 5:

Feedback on and approval of the entire integral design. Definite moment for structural changes. Reporting on the progress in constructing. The hull, the supporting framework for the panels and the propulsion installation should be completed, which must be proved by showing pictures of the parts mentioned.

Design or picture of the boat trailer that will be used for transporting the boat on the road.

Deadline:

15 April 2009

Step 6:

Approval of the boat. Approval takes place on the basis of a physical inspection of the vessel and of the safety precautions. The inspection is carried out under the supervision of the Technical Committee. The participants will be classified in an inspection scheme that will start some weeks prior to the race. If desired, the international participants can ask to be scheduled for inspection shortly before the start of the race.

As from 7 June 2009

Step 7:

Test of skill and swimming test

15 June 2009

Step 8:

Prologue: speed test (10 km), sprint and emergency stop

16 June 2009

When a team exceeds a deadline, they get 30 minutes of punitive time per day!!
