Solarboat crosses the Western Scheldt

On Friday 26 September the Scool solarboat of ROC Zeeland crossed the Western Scheldt

(26-9-2008).

This event took place as a promotion for the Dutch Open Solar Boat Challenge that will take place in June 2009 in Zeeland and Flanders.

According to team leader and Captain Hans Breure, the journey went like clockwork. The tide and the sun combined to make it an overall success. At the Ritthem beach many photographers and weatherman Jos Broeke were waiting for the boat’s arrival.

In 2009, the foundation “Zeeuwse Zonneboot Race” organises the first Open Dutch Championship for solarboats. From 15 to 20 June an international number of entrants will compete in a stage race of several days. It will also be a cross-border event. At the moment the organisation is investigating possibilities to start part of the race in Ghent for a stage through the “Kanaal naar Terneuzen”.
